Scientist
The Institute for Work & Health is an independent, not-for-profit research organization whose activities strive to reduce injury, illness and disability in the Ontario workforce.
The Institute is seeking an individual for the position of:
Scientist
As a member of the Institute’s scientific staff, you will design, conduct and publish research studies on the causes and consequences of work-related injury and illness. The incumbent will contribute as a principal investigator or co-investigator to the development and leadership of research projects. S/he will be comfortable working in a multidisciplinary research environment that includes clinicians, epidemiologists, biostatisticians, psychologists, sociologists and economists. S/he should be eligible for a status appointment with an appropriate faculty of a university affiliated with the Institute for Work & Health. This position reports directly to the Institute’s Scientific Director.
Duties and Responsibilities
The following are the expected duties and responsibilities as a member of the scientific staff of the Institute:
• Develop a research agenda in work & health as a principal investigator and participate as a co-investigator in other research projects;
• Lead a team of researchers in advancing the work & health agenda in Ontario;
• Lead the development of proposals for submission to research granting councils and applied research funding sources;
• Produce papers for peer-reviewed publications;
• Compete for personnel salary awards appropriate to career stage;
• Interact with the Institute’s Knowledge Transfer & Exchange staff and relevant stakeholders in collaborative research, knowledge transfer & exchange and evaluation activities;
• Comply with the Institute’s polices on scientific and ethical review and administrative policies; and
• Contribute to the general work environment and intellectual life of the Institute.
Education and Experience
Qualifications include doctoral-level training and at least four years of experience as an independent researcher.
Candidates for this position will have:
1) an established research focus in work and health;
2) experience working with workplace parties in designing and implementing research on the causes and consequences of work-related injury and illness;
3) a history of securing research grant funding;
4) demonstrated leadership in research; and
5) a successful record of mentoring more junior research staff.
Appointment will be at the Scientist level.
Relevant Skills and Attributes
A qualified candidate is expected to posses many of the following skills and attributes:
• Knowledge of theory relevant to work and health;
• Research experience with both primary data collection and secondary data analysis;
• Strong skills in quantitative statistical data analysis & interpretation;
• Well-developed English written and oral communication skills;
• Well-developed interpersonal skills for work with multidisciplinary Institute staff and a variety of external stakeholders;
• Ability to work in both a team environment and independently;
• Ability to multi-task and to set priorities and meet deadlines;
• Demonstrated award, grant, and publication record.
Salary Range: Salary will depend on qualifications and experience. Suitability for the position will be assessed at six months.
