Dr. Terrence Sullivan to share insights on improving health services at Cancer Care Ontario

October 7, 2010 (Toronto, Ontario) – Dr. Terrence Sullivan, CEO of Cancer Care Ontario and founding president of the Institute for Work & Health (IWH), will deliver this year’s Nachemson Memorial Lecture on Thursday, November 18.

The topic of the lecture, Improving quality and performance in health services, is a prominent focus of health-care policy in Ontario, with the introduction of the Excellent Care for All legislation.

Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) has been a leader in quality improvement initiatives in the past 10 years. CCO commissions the full range of ambulatory cancer treatments along with surgical wait time reduction efforts. In his talk, Dr. Sullivan will reflect on CCO’s experiences, including lessons learned and considerations for the commissioning of health services more broadly.

We are delighted that Dr. Sullivan will share insights from his experiences to all of us concerned with improving delivery of health-care services in Ontario, says Dr. Cameron Mustard, IWH president and senior scientist.

CCO has used a number of strategies to continually improve the performance of cancer services. These include regularly reviewing the performance of each regional cancer centre and working with regional vice presidents and clinical leaders to address problems. These strategies also include the provincial-regional alignment of leadership objectives, provision of funding contingent upon results, and the reporting of results to cancer care providers and the public.
