Immigrant workers and language diversity at work: What can employers do to keep workers safe?

Published: January 2026

Immigrants play a vital role in Canada’s labour market. However, they can also experience language barriers, which can in turn impact their health and safety. Language difficulties can impact workers' ability to access occupational health and safety (OHS) information, understand OHS practices and participate in making decisions related to workplace safety.

Supervisors, managers and small business owners play a key role in supporting the safety of immigrant workers. Although many face challenges around safely integrating immigrants into their workplaces, others have developed strategies to overcome workers' language difficulties. This document outlines employer practices that we heard about in a study, as well as strategies and considerations shared by employers and other stakeholders who participated in the study. It provides concrete ideas that may help address language barriers when recruiting and hiring, onboarding, and communicating with immigrant workers, especially those who struggle with one of Canada's official languages.
