Research Assistant – One-Year Contract

The Institute for Work & Health is an independent, not-for-profit research organization. Our mission is to promote, protect and improve the safety and health of working people by conducting actionable research that is valued by employers, workers and policy-makers. Since 1990, we have been providing research results and producing evidence-based products to inform the prevention and management of work-related injury and illness. We also train and mentor the next generation of work and health researchers.

The Institute is currently seeking a qualified person to fill the position of Research Assistant for a one-year term.

About the position

The successful candidate will support and coordinate the research of two scientists at the Institute for Work & Health whose research programs focus on promoting the employment and health of people living with chronic conditions causing episodic disabilities. The candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary research and stakeholder team, and will assist with the collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data. The candidate will also provide assistance with evidence synthesis and knowledge transfer and exchange activities, as well as other project needs. The candidate will work closely with the scientific team and other project support staff. Candidates should have an interest in applied research in the field of work and health and social determinants of health.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Participate in the implementation of research protocols, including study interviews and survey development and programming
  • Assist with the recruiting of study participants
  • Provide support with data analysis, including reviewing interview transcripts for accuracy, coding documents and extracting themes
  • Assist with knowledge sharing activities, which could include help with organizing research and stakeholder meetings and preparing written and data summaries for meetings and final reports
  • Support the coordination of the project by documenting project activities, tracking activities against research plans, producing meeting notes, and communicating with the research team, external partners and participants
  • Adhere to research ethics procedures; for example, those concerning privacy of information
  • Meet deadlines and conduct work in a timely way in a virtual work environment

Education and experience

  • A master’s degree in health sciences or social and behavioural sciences, or bachelor’s degree with a specialization in public health sciences, rehabilitation sciences, occupational health or a related field
  • Three years of project coordination experience, preferably in a research environment
  • Experience conducting interviews and focus groups and/or programming or collecting data using surveys
  • Experience analyzing qualitative data using Nvivo and experience working in a Windows Micorsoft Office environment, especially Word and Excel
  • Experience with knowledge synthesis (e.g. systematic or scoping reviews)
  • Excellent written communication skills, with a strong attention to detail
  • Ability to manage competing demands of different projects and independently coordinate and prioritize tasks and responsibilities
  • Experience and comfort with collaborative team-based project work

Salary range

Salary will depend on qualifications and experience, and will be in the range of $52,000 to $58,000. Suitability for the position will be assessed at three months.
